Chapter Eleven
Tuesday Night shift
My new shift at the newspaper was ten p.m. to six a.m. When I showed up, I lied and told Lyman that I’d be doing a ride-along that night. As long as I had my portable police radio with me, and as long as I bought back some police briefs to type up, he didn’t care where I was.
I put in a quick call to Betty Sue, who didn’t sound as if she missed me terribly much, but she did take the time to remind me to please use frizz control on my hair, and she also asked if I’d started a new diet yet.
“I’ve decided I’m going to stay the size I am, forever,” I informed her.
Dead silence.
“Oh,” she said finally. “Well, we’ll need to shop for a more flattering wardrobe for you, then.”
Yep. You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.
I also called Aphrodite to let her know that I wasn’t dead, or at least not any deader than the last time I’d seen her. Then, right after I went to the police station and got the evening’s police briefs from the public information officer, I headed over to the hospital where I’d died and woken up again.
I walked in the front door of the hospital like I knew what I was doing, and walked through the reception area. It was a typical night in a New York hospital waiting room, filled with dozens of people in various stages of distress. A man pressed a towel against his bleeding head. A woman coughed violently into her hands. Another woman vomited into a garbage can. Feverish children wailed.
There was a long line of people standing at the reception desk. Nobody bothered to glance my way when I came in. A bored-looking security guard stood at the door that led into the main area of the hospital. I strode up to him, trying to feel confident.
“You need to let me in,” I told him.
He glared at me, straightening up and bristling. “Go see the receptionist, lady.”
Panic flared up inside me. I hadn’t tried my Compelling on humans yet, only vampires. Maybe it wouldn’t work on them. Was I going to get arrested? I couldn’t get arrested. Nick and Simon would find out, and he’d demand to know what I was doing here, and now wasn’t the time to anger the vampires who would decide whether I lived or died.
“It’s an emergency, you’ve got to listen to me,” I said, struggling to calm myself. His expression went dull. “Let me in,” I added.
He opened the door for me and waved me through.
So, Simon had been right. My powers worked when I was under stress. Great. Was I going to have to be in complete panic mode every time I used my powers?
I walked through the door and quickly found a nurse’s aide who was carrying a plastic bin full of IV start kits.
“Take me to the morgue,” I told her. Apparently I was still panicked
